Neuromuscular Clinic

Neuromuscular Clinic provides family-centered care for children and youth with Neuromuscular Disorders that require coordinated care from several health professionals.

Overview

Neuromuscular Clinic provides family-centered care for children and youth with Neuromuscular Disorders that require coordinated care from several health professionals. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for the children, youth, and families that we see. Frequency of visits is every 6 months.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Should you require directions, check with front reception at SSCY Centre who will direct you to Clinic Crossing. Your child will have their weight and height measured by our clinic coordinator. You will then be taken into one of our clinic rooms. There will be a number of care providers that you see during your visit including a Pediatrician, Neurologist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Nurse Clinician and Social Worker. There are also some children that may see a Respirologist and Respiratory Therapist.

As you are seeing multiple care providers assessments are typically 2-3 hours long. We encourage families to bring snacks and activities for their children for these clinic appointments.

Meet Your Team

Pediatrician: to review nutrition, bone health and general concerns.

Neurologist: to assess your muscles, review available treatments/studies (if applicable) and prescribe medication specific to your child’s condition (if applicable).

Occupational Therapist: to assess your child’s equipment needs and modify/order equipment as needed.

Physiotherapist: to assess your child’s muscles and review exercises and stretches. Will complete a 6-minute walk test if applicable.

Nurse Clinician: to review general concerns, medications, other subspecialist follow ups and immunizations.

Social Work: to review home, school and activities and assist in community resources and supports.

Respirologist: some children will also require assessment by a Respirologist. If this is the case for your child, this appointment may occur with your Neuromuscular clinic visit, or may occur at Children’s Hospital. This is at the discretion of the Respirology team.

Respiratory Therapy: for clinics where children will also be seeing the Respirologist, your child will have a breathing test with the Respiratory Therapist if they are able to complete one. This is typically for children aged 6 and up.
