Stepping Out on Saturdays (SOS)

The Manitoba Stepping Out on Saturdays Program (aka “SOS Camp”) is a once-per-month therapeutic recreation program for children ages 5-12 years old with a diagnosis of FASD or who are on the waitlist for assessment with the Manitoba FASD Centre. Priority is given to children in care or supported by a child welfare agency.

Overview

The motto of the SOS Program is “Friendships Start Here”. The SOS Program occurs one Saturday per month and is designed to offer children a fun day in a supportive environment where they can play, learn and practice friendship skills, and gain strategies for self-regulation. Trained staff and a low supervision ratio are keys to a successful day. The SOS Program knows each child is unique, with their own gifts and strengths. Through the intake process, a plan to support each child is developed. The program is currently offered in five Manitoba locations: Bloodvein, Brandon, Selkirk, Thompson, and Winnipeg.

There is an SOS Facilitator for each location who plans and delivers the program. Trained Support Workers provide supervision at a 1:3 ratio during program hours. A Provincial Coordinator oversees and supports all five Manitoba locations.
